The Cyprus-flagged Container ship, ASTROSPRINTER collided with a 19th-century sailboat, NO.5 ELBE, in the afternoon of June the 8th while transiting through the Elbe River.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:00 UTC, near the mouth of the river Schwinger, Stade. The Astrosprinter was heading downstream from Hamburg towards the North Sea when the collision occurred.
Unfortunately, as a result of the collision the sailing ship sank. There were 43 people on board the NO 5 ELBE at the time of the accident
The German fire service managed to successfully save all 43 individuals, as it was attending to a minor accident just a few hundred meters away. However, at least 8 people sustained injuries in the process, and 1 person is considered to be seriously injured as a result of the accident.
Following the collision, the Astrosprinter continued towards the Elbe estuary and successfully anchored off Brunsbuettel at approximately 14:30 UTC, in order to undergo a thorough investigation regarding the earlier collision.
The No. 5 ELBE was built back in 1883 and is considered a historic wooden sailing ship. It had just gone through a costly restoration, having received new outer wooden planks and a new stern, at a cost of approximately €1.5 million.
It is not yet clear what events led to the collision. The Elbe river is a busy shipping route, but it is also fairly wide.
