The Blikur general cargo ship suffered an explosion in its engine room when entering the port of Reykjavik after arriving from the UK on Monday 25th June.

An immediate assessment of the vessel concluded that there was no sign of fire, but heavy smoke had affected crew members on board. Those affected were transported to the National hospital where they were examined for possible smoke inhalation.

As there was no damage to the freighter, it was initially anchored and later berthed at the Port of Reykjavik where the Eimskip Information Officer Ólafur William Hand was able to launch an initial investigation into the cause of the explosion.
