The Panama-flagged Reefer, MONTELAURA collided with the Moroccan fishing vessel AL AKHAWAYAN during the evening hours of September the 26th while the vessel was transiting off the coast of Morocco.
The incident occurred some 35 nautical miles west of the Western Sahara port of Dakhla, while the reefer was en route from Spain to Gabon.
Initial reports suggest that as a result of the collision, the fishing vessel sank. Of the 16 crew members onboard the vessel, 5 were successfully rescued following the incident.
Unfortunately, however, 11 seafarers are still considered to be missing.
A search & rescue operation has been launched in order to locate the remaining seafarers.
Local officials have been quoted saying that “all available means have been mobilized” when it comes to recovering the unfortunate fishermen.
In the meantime, Montelaura, which according to initial reports did not realize the collision took place, was ordered to interrupt her voyage and sail for the port of Dakhla.
Local authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident and will determine the Montelaura’s role in the collision.
